After transformations, extensions carried out Between 1800 and 1802, by the architects Percier & Fontaine, on a 17th century edifice, Malmaison was bought by Josephine de BEAUHARNAIS.
This Chateau coincided with what she sought in the outskirts of Paris and also represented a unique specimen of what is known as the consular style, elegant and refined, near in spirit to that of the 18th century. The interior décor does not yet have what was later to be the somewhat inflated character typical of the Imperial Style.
In the Musée National du Château de Malmaison, the visitor has the opportunity of seeing the setting that Napoleon and Josephine actually lived in and of appreciating why it has kept a genuine feeling of what it was in the past.
They lived there during the consulate, then between 1800 and 1802, Malmaison being as was the Tuileries, the seat of government in France. Meetings, official or private receptions, concerts, balls after and country games also took place here.
After her divorce Josephine nevertheless still used Malmaison as her residence after this in 1809 and it still bears the stamp of her personality.
Many works of art have now been put back to where they were originally intended to be and the room where the Empress died on 29th may 1814 , 15 on the first floor.
