The regiment of Swiss Guards Louis 13th’s founded in 1616 was responsible for protection. These soldiers were paying guests had hodgings with people who rented or owned flats or houses in their working area.
In 1756, King Louis 15th ordered that three barracks be built at Rueil, Courbvoie and Saint-Denis to house the Swiss Guards.
Every week, a detachment used to go to Versailles to stand in honour at their posts. On August 10th 1792, the Swiss Guards are massacred at the Tuileries in their attempt to protect the King. The Rueil Barracks were designed by the architect Axel Guillaumot and have been classified as a Historical Monument since 1973.
