About : Colloque Rueil Ville Impériale

Under the direction of Jacques-Olivier Boudon, President of the Institut Napoléon, in partnership with the journals Napoleon I and Napoleon III.

Two hundred and twenty years after its launch, the Egyptian expedition continues to fascinate. The memory of Bonaparte facing the Pyramids, throwing his soldiers : "From the top of these Pyramids 40 centuries of history you contemplate" is in all memories.

It is true that the young general was able to heal his image and highlight the success of this campaign, relying in particular on the group of scientists he had brought with him and who made the expedition a true scientific discovery. But the expedition is not limited to that. It was also a colonial conquest, thought as such, which continued after the departure of Bonaparte, under the leadership of Kléber and Menou.

The campaign was also marked by a merciless war in which the clashes were particularly violent, a war that ends with the capitulation of the French armies to England. A clash of civilizations, the campaign finally helped to change relations between France and Egypt, announcing the breakthrough of the Suez Canal.
