About : Guided tour of the exhibition « Marie Vassilieff, the soul of Montparnasse »

The soul of this feverish Montparnasse is a Russian artist, Marie Vassilieff (1884-1957) who was a pupil of Matisse. Cubist painter, she participated in the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants and exhibited in Russia, including 1915 in the exhibition 0.10. She is a friend of Douanier Rousseau, Modigliani, Léger, Braque, Picasso, Man Ray and Kiki de Montparnasse. Before opening her own academy, Villa Vassilieff, she runs the Russian Academy. She opens a popular canteen frequented by her friends but also by Chana Orloff, Blaise Cendrars, Nina Hamnet, Edgar Varese or Zadkine.

The work of Marie Vassilieff is abounding and varied: blooming through contact with various materials, sometimes extremely modest, she makes drawings, paintings but also masks, puppets and dolls that caricature celebrities of the time. She conceives the perfume Rosine for Paul Poiret, imagines the costumes of the dancers of the Swedish Ballets in collaboration with Foujita, Léger and Picabia and draws the posters and some decorations of the Balls of the Amicale of the Russian Artists (Alexandra Exter, Natalia Goncharova, Léopold Survage ..;) and the Rescue Fund of Artists. She created furniture for the 1925 Decorative Arts exhibition, decorated two pillars of La Coupole in 1927 and in 1937 she composed a monumental poster for Gare Montparnasse.
