About : Exposition "Bonaparte et les sables du désert"

Every two years, the mummy room is transformed. This year, Egyptomania is in the spotlight. If the mummies join the cabinets of curiosities from the 16th century, the craze for Egypt and the mummies accentuates at the end of the 18th century. In 1799, more than 150 scholars accompanied Bonaparte in his Egyptian campaign. They map the country, draw its archaeological heritage and study its fauna and flora.

Description of Egypt, which contains more than 800 engravings, is published between 1802 and 1830. It becomes a source of inspiration for the decorative arts, sculpture and architecture, and gives birth to the egyptizing style and the egyptomania.
