About : Exhibition Ernest Pignon-Ernest
Ernest Pignon-Ernest exhibits at the Atelier Grognard in Rueil-Malmaison, a place which echoes the artist's work since it is a former factory of copper, zinc and tin plates for intaglio engraving and photoengraving.
The "Wall Papers" exhibition chronologically follows the artist's production and traces the evolution of his artistic approach for nearly 50 years.
Nearly 200 works, almost all of Ernest Pignon-Ernest's editions, accompanied by sketches, photographs and preparatory works will be exhibited, evoking his interventions from the 1970s to the present day. This is the first real retrospective of his serigraphs.
An initiator of urban art in France, Ernest Pignon-Ernest has been working in public spaces since the 1960s to "create a work of situations", to densify places to better reveal them.
Strongly influenced by the painters of the Italian Renaissance, Caravaggio in particular, his drawings show the importance of a form of classicism in the line, with dazzling power. His life-size human representations are made in charcoal, black chalk and using notched erasers of different thicknesses. Ernest Pignon-Ernest reproduces them in serigraphy and sticks them on the walls of cities all over the world. Politically and socially engaged, Ernest Pignon-Ernest develops an art that seeks to upset mentalities, to open minds to the reality of the world.
His sketches, drawings and collages aim to provoke the viewer, forcing him to face the reality suffered by millions of people. By resurrecting historical events and exposing injustices.
