About : Exhibition Janine Charrat

In 2016, the municipal archives received a large donation : the personal archives of Janine Charrat, considered a dance prodigy since her appearance at 13 in the film La mort du cygne by Jean-Benoît Levy.

The exhibition Janine Charrat, The body and the soul highlights this unpublished archive collection.

We discover the portrait of this exceptional dancer and choreographer of extraordinary popularity. She created her first ballet at 20, started her own dance company at 27 and went all over the world to present her works. Today, while Roland Petit and Maurice Béjart, his post-war companions, enjoy great notoriety, his work and his contributions to dance remain unknown. Janine Charrat had been a citizen of Rueil since the 1980s and had participated in the life of the city by being president of a dance competition.

Visitors to discover, through the unpublished documents on display, the passionate life of Janine Charrat, as well as her career as prolific as it is avant-garde. A focus is made on his ballet Les Algues (1953), recognized in retrospect as his masterpiece.
