About : Jacques Baumel’s walk
Jacques Baumel’s park and walk surround the historical site of Mont Valerien
halfway up. Peaking at almost 162 meters, Mont Valerien is a natural belvedere
overlooking Paris and its region.
First a medieval hermitage, Mont-Valerien then became a popular place
of pilgrimage during the 17th and 19th centuries. In the middle of the 19th
century one of the forts forming part of the Parisian belt was built there.
During the Second World War, the site became the principal place where most
of the executions ordered by the German authorities took place.
From 1944 onwards, thanks to support from General de Gaulle and the work of
the organisations of the families of those who were shot, it became a emorial site. The Mémorial de la France combattante was built there in 1960 and in 2010 new museum exhibition areas were opened.
